I like Castlevania 2 which did a whole lot more with the levels.
I didn't even know that people were complaining about it until recently which is why they made C3 look more like C1.

Technically, the og Fallout series is a spiritual successor to Wasteland (which was from 1988 or something), and the modern Fallouts are spiritual successors to those...but that's getting a little too Xzibit for me so I think that only half counts.
