"tankie" has become a meaningless term
It seems that anyone who is even slightly critical of US imperialism, capitalism, or shows any amount of support (even if critical support) towards Marxist-Leninist countries or movements is called one.

Sorry to hear that.
Never heard of the term until this thread post. 🤷‍♂️
The only time I have ever seen people be called a "tankie" is if they are preaching authoritarianism or running around saying dumb garbage like "Stalin was actually based." Outside of that I haven't seen it used.
Since there has never been a "true" Marxist nation(state withering away and all that), aren't any supporters of any actual communist countries tankies by definition?

However you don't have to support Marxism to criticize US imperialism or capitalism.
You could be monarchist or anarchist.
Tankie sounds like a derogatorily ironic term of affection a grumpy healer might use for a knight in an M.M.O.R.P.G. "Yeah yeah, I got it. Now get bank to the front lines to cover my butt and try not to die on me, will ya Tankie?"

Oh brother. Tankies have been saying ♥♥♥♥ like "scratch a liberal and you find a fascist" for decades, so spare me.

Anyway. I call people tankies not when they criticize US imperialism, but when they refuse to criticize or actively support that of any non-Western country.

"Tankie is a pejorative term for a leftist political figure who supports authoritarian or militaristic, anti-capitalist regimes. The term originated as a reference to hard-line, pro-Soviet members of the Communist Party of Great Britain. It is now used more broadly to refer to supporters of authoritarian socialism. The term is often used as an insult."

It's a derogatory term for a far-left winger who defends authoritarian socialist states, like the USSR. I think it originates from the Hungarian revolution of 1956, which demanded autonomy from the USSR and was brutally crushed by Soviet armored columns. Some Westerners, who saw the Hungarians as traitors to the global communist movement, actually supported the Soviet's actions, hence the term "tankies".
Sometimes it's just plain necessary to use highly restrained force to maintain peaceful order against Naughty people.
