For most of human evolution, being able to store lots of fat was a net advantage, since you'd never know when the next famine would hit, and your daily activities would make it impossible to achieve true obesity anyway.
Pacific Islanders are a perfect example of this. Since their lifestyle was basically feast-of-famine, and they've had plenty of genetic bottlenecks to filter out naturally skinny people, they're genetically predisposed to obesity. Add in terrible diets introduced after WW2, and you have island nations like Nauru where almost everbody is overweight.
No extra exercise.
