My last loss

Before you decide to reply just keep in mind: I'm under the influence right now. But I still want to share something.

I'm currently at the final stage signing papers with the security forces. Basically, handing over my life to the country. But whatever.

What really matters is this: I had one true friend. Since early childhood. He died.
The system lists him as "missing in action," but the truth is he was left behind on enemy ground. He never came back.

And now . . . when I drink, and even when I don’t I feel like I see him.
He’s sitting next to me. Calm, just like he always was.
And he asks me: “Leave me half a cup of beer.”
Sometimes, it feels like he’s just gone somewhere… and will be back soon.

Й знову разом принесемо зерно в той гарячий літній вечір.
А потім вип’ємо вина.

Keep your head down and your eyes on the sky, with any luck you will make it through your enlistment period. Sorry for you loss, war is unkind to everyone, and no one wins in the end.

Good decisions are 'never' made when you are under the effects of alcohol (ever wondered why casinos like to give out free drinks—search it up, if you cannot figure it out).

I think you should give yourself time to mourn instead of signing up to any contracted periods of service that you will be unable to walk back on later. If you are truly committed to something, then you will do it while your head-space is clear, and with all your wits in-tune.

To emphasise on the first post of this forum: "no one wins in war"; you won't be getting him back through fighting Russians. There is no "avenging" him, there will only be more bloodshed; and another Mother who loses her son fighting a war for the politicians.
