It's either you turn off like a computer no regrets no anger no one to blame you just cease to exist
OR.... YOU inside your very sophisticated machine called your body gets out of it's prison and continues to exist as pure energy with everything that you learned during your life

Your just gone, like sleeping, but nothing.
No idea, what happens will happen.
It's difficult if not impossible to know exactly, I assume it would be similar to before life which I (or you) obviously can't remember.

Decomposition, of course...

There are hundreds of possibilities and everyone on Earth is trying to sell you their version.
Lets just accept the simplest fact that there is no way for anyone to know and everything that people come up with is at best wishful thinking.

we go back to the same state we were in before we were born

there's literally no other logical answer, anything else is schizo theories. humans aren't special, nothing is waiting for you anywhere.
I am religious yet theism is NOT my religion. EVERYONE has a RELIGION? The question becomes, what is your religion?

What happens after death? Why does or would it ever matter? Life is here and now therefore worry about what you're doing or will being doing while and as you're living.

Unfortunately, most likely, after death, a person's consciousness moves to some new world. I may be wrong, but most likely this is so.
It is already known that the visible world, given to us in sensations (and with the help of devices), is only a few percent of the entire mass of the world around us.
It is also known (no one has refuted this yet) that DNA does not contain information about the morphology, structure of the human body.
Many living beings are born with a set of complex instincts and skills - hereditary memory. Information about this is also not encoded in DNA.

So, most likely, the human brain is just a terminal for communication with the main storage of information.

This is my personal assumption ;-)
It's probably the same as prelife, but we don't know for sure.
when i had my appendix removed, they placed a mask over my mouth and nose and told me to be breathing deeply. i did, and within seconds i felt my consciousness fade. this is what i imagine death is, it is like going to sleep but you do not wake.

there is no thought, no emotion, no dreams.

to some this sounds depressing, and i am understanding the need to believe in something more to erase this fear, but to me this permanent cessation of consciousness is why we must be doing all we can to enjoy the one life we have.
I believe that when I die I'll be cremated and become a pile of ashes because that's what they do with you unless you make a big deal of it and want to be encased in concrete in the ground so you don't become a zombie spread anthrax.

Yes, same here. Just recycled energy and atoms.

Sometimes I wish I was religious or more spiritual or something, but I'm quite pragmatic and science-minded about these things.

If we kept coming back, like our souls, wouldn't we remember it? Some people claim they remember previous lives, though.

I don't expect anything, but if something does happen, it will be a nice surprise, I guess :steamsunny:
