Fallout 2
newgrounds, go play some of the old flash game classics.
The abandonware site used to be good until gog started buying up all the old, deprecated stuff.
Tyrian 2000 is available for free on GOG.
team fortress 2?

This is a great idea too. There were lots of fun games that were flash/browser based. Siege Master is one of my favorites. There's something satisfying about setting that catapult just right, taking into consideration ammo load weight, to knock down fortresses. Fair warning, there are adverts if those annoy you:

Non flash-based, I remember reading about how that Area 51 fps game (the one where David Duchovny and Marilyn Manson were voice actors) is free, but I can't find it.

my favourites on newgrounds were the old turn based rpgs, like sonny and final battle or whatever it was called. i also liked the madness combat game, and some of the pico games were pretty class too when they were not attempting to be edgy. but the edge was sort of part of the charm of newgrounds, back then.

there was also a smash bros style game i am recalling on newgrounds, but with newgrounds characters like pico, hank or the tankmen.

Haha, oh boy, they'd never get away with making a game like Pico today. Probably. It was one of my favs too, btw, ignoring the edgy crap but you're also right in that edge was part of their Schtick. Not a videogame, but that "FDA" music video still makes me laugh.

I posted a whole slew of legitimate freeware releases in a previous thread thread. Most of them are rather old-timey. Some of them are actually games from back in the day that have been released for free by or with the blessing of their developers or publishers.

I don't know what specifically rubs your personal reminiscence buttons to isolate any off of the list I made there, but it is hard for me to imagine anybody here doesn't have a soft spot for Ski Free[ski.ihoc.net]. I mean, I guess rationally speaking I understand that its been long enough since it was removed as a Windows pack-in for some children from that period to grow into adults without ever having seen it, but my heart just doesn't want to believe it.
