Fun Fact U.S. Milk
Mastitis is a significant issue in the United States dairy industry, affecting both cow health and milk quality.
Prevalence and Impact:
Widespread occurrence: Nearly all dairy operations (99.7%) in the US reported having at least one case of mastitis.
Affects many cows: Approximately 38% of dairy cows in the United States experience clinical mastitis symptoms.
Clinical vs. Subclinical: Clinical mastitis, with visible signs, affects about one-fourth of cows (24.8%), while subclinical mastitis (elevated somatic cell count without visible symptoms) is also a significant concern, being more prevalent than clinical mastitis in some studies.
Economic Impact: Mastitis costs the US dairy industry an estimated $2 billion annually.
Somatic Cell Counts (SCC):
Indicator of Mastitis: Somatic cell count, a measure of inflammatory cells in milk, is a key indicator of mastitis.
Legal Limits: The legal maximum bulk tank SCC for Grade A milk shipments in the US is 750,000 cells/mL.
Industry Average: The national average SCC in 2021 was 179,000 cells/mL, well below the legal limit.
Improving Quality: Larger dairy farms tend to have lower SCCs, contributing to a general trend of improved milk quality.
Managing Mastitis:
Diagnosis: Owners and milkers are responsible for diagnosing mastitis on a large percentage of operations.
Treatment: Antibiotics are commonly used to treat mastitis. However, there's growing interest in non-antibiotic approaches to control mastitis.
Prevention: Improving hygiene during milking and housing are essential to prevent mastitis infections. Farmers also monitor bulk tank SCC, incidence of clinical mastitis, and new infection rates to manage mastitis.

well that's to counterbalance the considerable lack of poop and insect in our food compared to canadians and europeans so there's that :V
There's a difference between subclinical and clinical mastitis. Subclinical global average is 42% so if the US is only 38% that means the US is better than average on this statistic. Likewise, reports show Europe has a higher prevalence of clinical mastitis than the US.

What basically is happening here is OP is cherry picking pieces of information, and publishing those in a vacuum, without context, in an attempt to create a negative thread about the United States, for the sake of creating such a thread. Not out of any serious revelation discovered, or actual issue existing. It's a global issue, that the US is on the better side of.
