it's just that completionist mindset, I guess. achievements give some big dopamine hits, and your brain really likes that

I think that might explain it then
I think for me its that chiming sound effect :)

Steam: *ding!* your dopamine hit is ready :)

I love achievements too, but I am missing so many 100%'s in games

There's your answer!

Maybe check the forums of that particular game and see if anyone has found a fix for them being broken, or send a message to the devs asking them to fix them.

I've just had a quick look at that game forum, nothing came up when I searched for achievements not working. Are they aware of it?

Try this:

Officially, it would be classed as a bug so by contacting them directly this way might be the better option, good luck!

I am the same, and don't like to leave any game unfinished even if I don't like the game. Atm my average completion rating is low at 90%, I have several games I have started but not finished.

the only thing that stops me is lack of skill like with the RE games

I have found a couple so far I couldn't finish, but I'm selective which games I buy. If it has a bunch of achievements that are 0.1% I avoid the game.
Maybe you like collecting things. Do you collect cards, coins, or anything else?

I used to like to 100% games on console, getting that Platinum Trophy. Never figured out exactly what it was that compelled me either. I knew I couldn't show them to anyone and impress them; if anything they had the opposite effect. I guess it was just knowing I'd "mastered" a game as much as the developers had expected any player could.

Achievements feel so much more hollow and like a background thing on PC though. I don't even think about them anymore and am always surprised when one pops up, like "Oh right, those exist. Almost forgot". If you ever learn to stop caring about them you'll find there are some really chill experiences you can have just playing a game without trying to earn anything.
It's a goal, basic carrot approach.
