Once Russia was captured by the mongolian hordes, it has been converted into a nation of conquest, which is still true to this day.
Russia could have embraced democracy, could have used it's massive lands flush with resources to build a prosperous nation for it's people, but that's just not the russian way.
The russian way is to conquer and plunder the wealth of others, just like how the mongols designed it.
That is why Russia isn't retreating from Ukraine and has no intention of coexisting peacefully with neighboring countries.
If they capture Ukraine, they will strip it of it's people and their wealth, funneling russians into Ukraine while siphoning the wealth into Moscow and it's elites. And then they'll attack another nation to repeat the process, till they are either beaten or fall apart... again.

Depends on the country.
Labelling a Royal Marine as any wanker that can become a soldier because someone can join a legion is quite far off the mark.

A person can get a rifle and call themselves a soldier in a militia but they wouldn't be a soldier even if others label them so on the basis they got a uniform and a rifle / assault rifle.

Generally speaking the Russian army is considered more a 'hoard' than a professional military.
