Is there merit in informing everyone you don't care?
Like in a one-on-one conversation saying to someone you don't care might make sense but in the presence of several people is there any reason to announce your total disinterest in whatever is the subject at hand or is it just something one would do for arbitrary attention and/or to make the one who brought it up feel bad?

The only merit is to prove they're a fool. Sure, they don't care. But if that's the truth, they should have the audacity to leave the room and go home.
Performance. That's about it.

For me when I’m talking to someone in real life and they’re just blabbing on and on I just say “I really gotta use the bathroom.” Just to get away.

Yes because they are just trying to bait people.

its cool to not care, you become as cool as a cucumber if you say you do not care. so turn up your collar, slick back your hair and put on some shades

We presume no one cares, which would include most of what is posted on these forums, they're just bored. To state the obvious would be rude. No one ever really cares but we're polite and someone might be interested, someone might care. If not, just ignore it and move along. Stating it would be the CLASSIC upset because they feel no one cares about them bit.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Why+do+people+say+%22I+don't+care%22+in+public+conversations+that+they+were+not+a+part+of
"People may say "I don't care" in public conversations they weren't part of for a variety of reasons, often related to social dynamics, emotional expression, or a desire to disengage. It can be a way to express indifference, disinterest, or even a form of emotional defense mechanism. Sometimes, it's a way to shut down a conversation or signal a lack of engagement, especially if they perceive the topic as irrelevant or uncomfortable.
Here's a breakdown of potential reasons:

Indifference:
The person genuinely doesn't find the conversation topic relevant or engaging.
Emotional defense:
Saying "I don't care" can be a way to protect oneself from potential hurt or disappointment, especially if they anticipate a negative outcome.
Disengagement:
It can be a way to signal a lack of interest in participating in the conversation or to avoid further involvement.
Social awkwardness:
In some cases, it might stem from a lack of social skills or difficulty understanding unspoken social cues.
Defense mechanism:
It could be a way to avoid dealing with their own emotions or the emotions of others, especially in sensitive or uncomfortable situations.
Attention-seeking:
In certain situations, it could be a way to get attention or provoke a reaction from others.
Masking vulnerability:
It can be a way to hide feelings of vulnerability or insecurity, making it seem like they don't care, even if they do.
"

The "attention-seeking" bullet-point that the A.I. came up with was the first one that I thought of.

Didn't think of that "Masking vulnerability" one that it listed, which is basically the A.I. describing "tsundere".

A lot of the other points that it came up with don't really make sense - like... if you want to defend yourself against uncomfortable content then don't engage with it - it's pretty simple.
...but then people don't always and consistently behave rationally.

If AI understands tsundere that means we must be mere years off tsundere AI

Or Sassy AI maybe

It's like saying we don't negotiate with terrorists. Just saying it does nothing, you have to shoot them too otherwise your point won't get across. Saying I don't care is like shooting terrorists.

what's this about?

the other day I saw on the news, about a murder case, someone pulled a gun on two police before they were trying to question him for disturbance the neighbor, mind you, this guy is a veteran, there was a shoot off and he chose to use a big machine gun, but his position is too compromised, and he took one before he even placed him aim.

the victim family chose to appeal for life sentence instead of execution for the process for execution in legal system could take lots years, they want fast resolve, that's what the news says, what were they thinking.

Yeeep... there's that "human rationality" that I alluded to.

Sometimes, people need to be reminded that they do not speak for everyone else. If you start putting words in my mouth, there's a very good chance that I'll have something to say about it.
