I think tourism is just an expensive version of going to the Zoo

Was walking to work this morning and saw one of them open top buses that drive tourists around to look at historical streets, buildings, landmarks etc. And listen to historical facts.

But to me it feels like one of them drive through Zoo's you see, the ones with the lions, monkeys etc... And you are allowed to in some cases feed them animals..

It feels like that with an open top bus. But this one you are not allowed to feed and the tourist guide is explaining the Animals i.e the people, how they have evolved over the years and centuries and yet some hold on to old skills and how they survive.

It is like

To your right you can see this creature wash themselves in the old ways

And

To your left, you can see this creature keep old skills alive that helped them survive for centuries.

Etc... etc...

So yes, tourism is just an really expensive Zoo trip

Well, going to the zoo is one kind of vacation so it's similar.

But tourism offer a lot more activity than just looking, and far more interesting than animals.

Mainstream tourism is definitely strange. My OH once joked that in Paris, it's the tourists who wear berets and eat croissants, while the locals wear baseball caps and eat burgers. There's often some truth to stereotypes, but most international tourist spots sell a dream that locals don't actually live in. The tourists want that dream, so the destination delivers it.
