Are hostels crap? (Yes or No)
They are different from hotels (where you have a room to yourself with own amenities, despite it costing more) while hostels are the opposite: a room consisting of bunk beds as it's a shared quarters with backpackers (no private bathroom, amenities are communal) but it's cheaper than staying at a hotel.

Experiences vary depending on country and type of hostel. The thing that also sets them apart from hotels are that: the mattresses used at hostels are "second hand" (hotels give the mattresses they deem bad discarding them to hostels for "charity" aka. handouts) while hotels get newer or better mattresses.

You also lack privacy at hostels (as it's a shared space) while hotels respect privacy at least. Also they say it's ill advised on leaving belongings unattended at hostels since it's a room shared with strangers (you don't know their intentions nor trust them) as there are horror stories of people having their stuff stolen.

Room Service isn't even a thing at hostels, as it's a "go get it yourself" or "order food" type environment, a communal kitchen where appliances exist (electric kettle, microwave) with the table being also a shared space. That's not the case with hotels as they have room service dedicated to bringing in food.

I've never and will never stay at a hostel. I require a luxurious spa bath with a jetted tub. I require a suite with a separate living room and dining area.

Sharing a room with 9 strangers and sharing a bathroom with 70 other people? YUCK
Yes they are

well hostel in town are ok

hostel in the wild good luck
In a 9 person environment, statistically 2 or more are there to cause problems and are attracted to hostiles, i means hostels, because its a space they can do this in.

It is an immaturity people tend to grow out of, being an abuser or trusting strangers, but thats what they are catering to.

The same is true of shared dorms for spies, which is what the hostel system was developed for. Keeping vagrant spies from boobytrapping their rooms to keep other rival homeless spies out. Kind of a young persons stupid self harm risk of a career.

I strongly dislike them, but to be fair having 8 people try to hold me down and torture me and having to break all their limbs, break into the managers office to take all the cash, and finding a real hotel was the last straw.
They're exactly like in the movie.
