i have watched playthroughs of some of them. and aye, i like the story and grim atmosphere of 4.
The open-world is set dressing. Outside of the story missions you drive around doing nothing. GTA Online was just grinding missions for money so you can buy more vehicles to continue driving around doing nothing. The actual weapons and other game mechanics are shallow and boring.
It sold well because it appealed to mouth-breathers who would always blast rap music over the voice chat in every server. The game allowed them to live out their e-thug fantasies of robbing and shooting other people in the streets. They just treat the game like a giant PvP arena because they are cursed with Fortnite-level brains.
