Germany Admits Europe Has Been ‘Free-Riding’ on America
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged U.S. criticism that Europe underinvested in its own defence, admitting, “We have been free-riders in the past.” He said that Europe is now stepping up, aligning more closely with Washington.

Germany’s chancellor says Europe failed to invest in its own defence but is now aligning more closely with the U.S. and stepping up military spending.

A little late for that. Isn't Europe majority Muslim now? Why not ask your "new Europeans" to fight your wars?

After Russia invaded Georgia, which predated the Ukrainian conflict by several years, they should of considered additional allocations of funds. I could see why they would limit spending after the Cold War, but the world will always have conflicts, and defense should always be a priority for any nation.
Trump doesn't seem to like him. I can understand that.
They knew then what they know now. They were holding out, they finally caved.

Rainbow flag defense us with protests
Quite the opposite. US big tech and related companies are exploiting Europeans all over the place. Just consider why your operating system is a slop or why your graphics card is overpriced garbage. How much of your personal info is Google and Meta stealing on a daily basis etc.

Germany is just guilt-tripping WW2 still, that's why they keep spreading their self-hate and insecurity.

Free-riding ? Yeah, that's the latest term "à la mode" in the US, to justify that this superpower is in fact the poor poor victim of the rest of the world.

Tell me, when was the last time Germany was threatened by invasion ? When was the last time Germany waged a war, at all ?

So, what were they "free-riding", in the end ?

Ho, and i kinda remember that Germany doubled it's defense budget back in 2022 ... so 3 years prior to now.

It's what Merz said, not me. The truth hurts doesn't it.

So 6% is the new majority?

This is unfortunately what happens when you have 2 brain cells and both of them are fighting for third place 🧠

The entire world basically freeloads off America.

No more freeloaders. The status quo is no longer sustainable.

Politics says a lot of things, they even are specialized in "talking and not moving an arm for an inch". About truths, gonna respond or not ?

The less we are dependent on America, the better. The best the US gets out completely. In order, of course. Europe arms itself so strongly that the USA can withdraw. That would be the best thing. If the USA interferes, it will never work and then they should bear the burden alone.

That's a rather startling departure from the position Germany usually takes. Logistics and supply to US troops are paid for in large part by Germany and not part of the NATO budget. If it were Trump the whole world would know every penny spent in that regard and probably inflate the numbers while he's at it.

I think we should take it step by step. Whatever we upgrade, the US should withdraw. They're not popular anyway, except maybe in Poland. ,-)
