Do you think the phrase "man up" can be considered offensive?
I'm not asking if YOU think it's offensive, or if you think it SHOULD be offensive. I'm asking if you can imagine a hypothetical way that the phrase could be considered offensive.

"Man up" meaning like, if you were afraid of going into a shed outside because there were wasps, you might tell yourself to "man up" aka stop being scared and get it done.

in the description, what am I supposed to say lmao

anyway I can't imagine a scenario where it doesn't sound too dumb
When someone tells me to man up, I say “No, thanks”.
No, only toilets say "man up."

its very offensive
not really, because it can be used towards anyone. if used specifically towards a man telling him to be more masculine, then yes that is bad. the phrase "toughen up" is more generic and fitting if one is wishing to tell someone to be a bit less fragile

See? Turns out everything requires you to think. Take the words less literally and it'll make sense

Yeah I can imagine it being offensive. It's basically disregarding someone's concerns for the situation they are in and telling them to just "deal with it" when clearly they may need some help. It's a lack of concern for the hardships someone may be going through and struggling with.

i think this is how it is used the vast majority of the time, aye. it is just an easy way for a curt and cruel person to disregard someones hardships. but i think there is value in the phrase "toughen up" sometimes, and places where it can be genuinely applicable.

Its just something people use to shame men, manipulate men, into doing whatever that person wants.

Shame men? What?

Telling a man to man up implies that they aren't being man-enough. Was that what was confusing you?

Telling a guy to act tougher and more masculine isn't shaming men. It's wanting them to embrace being a man.
