Most people dont even finish there games let alone even make it past 10 hours.
Steam isnt that interesting to browse around and see peoples profiles. One reason is because of SAM, making achievements pointless, another reason is most people hide their profiles, and the biggest reason is most people are game hoarders and cant make it 10 hours in most of their games. I truly believe gaming is an addiction to most people who "game" and truly arent a gamer. Its like saying a guy who only plays call of duty is a gamer. A true gamer actually plays and finishes a wide variety of games and even 100% some of them. Otherwise gaming is most likely the same thing as social media to you, an addiction. As opposed to a hobby with challenges and goals you arent achieving anything, but looking for the next game high. Whether its new mechanics, graphics, engine or style. Why play the middle of a good game when you can play the beginning of a new good game thats exciting cause its new again.

Are you saying the people who spend fewer hours playing games are MORE addicted than the ones who play more games for more hours?
I try to finish ones I start. I have more unfinished games atm than I have ever had, but I do expect to beat most of them before starting any new ones.

When I was playing more games, since nowadays there is not much time, but back then I would finish all the games I start to the end.

True that, nowadays everyone has 1 milion games hoarding them and nothing played
its always shocking when you look at steam achievements and see only like 30% of people made it to the first boss or something.
As long as you have fun playing a game, i dont think it matters that much. Just dont go cheating in multiplayer games, but aside from that, its not that big of a deal.

I think you are trying to call out consumerism as the addiction.

It looks like you're noticing people who buy games, then rush to buy another one, and another, and another, just like someone who buys dozens of guitars within in 5 years, yet plays only 1 or 2.

This is a trend of consumer sickness which exists outside of gaming.
Achievements are pointless no matter what. With or without SAM. They were only added to games to compel OCD gamers to play them longer.

bloons can last for thousands of hours if you want, it really does go on forever.
Games are so HUGE now, they have been for the past 15 maybe 20 years. There is SO MUCH CONTENT! We could argue TOO MUCH content. WAY TOO MUCH! I think the last game I actually finished was released between 2010 to 2015. Ever since 2005ish I finished VERY few games.

I could LIVE in Fallout New Vegas, I could play that FOREVER!

The only games I have ever "completed" are those with a compelling story that I wanted to see through to the end. I have never explored a game down to the coding, to seek 100%, whatever that means. Aren't the achievements chosen by someone else anyway? So it's just arbitrary. How do you complete Factorio or Planet Zoo or those strange cookie clicking games? You don't it's just there to pick up when you feel the need.

I agree there is a problem that develops with compulsive buying of games, playing 2 hours then going onto something else. I've done it myself; usually fuelled by drugs. As well as myself, I blame steam and other online platforms for that. They save my debit card details and all I have to do is press go until my account is empty.

Plus there is the argument that we should appreciate the developers work as artists. Especially in these days when so many developers treat their game like a cash machine rather than an artistic statement or a gift to the fans who want to enjoy it.

Freddie Mercury said something like when you come to a Queen concert I want you to forget everything else that is going on in your life just for those few hours. Where is that mentality from the developers? That's what started the whole thing; pale nerds in basements who created cool ♥♥♥♥ for other pale nerds in basements.

Um many games can be completed in less than 10 hours. The three "Cat Quest" games are such examples.

I would make the generalization that people who finish or atleast progress far in most of their games are real gamers. They may or may not be addicted. But one thing is for sure, if you have a ton of games and play alot but dont play anything for long, you are sure running on dopamine hits (true addiction), atleast the true game is into his hobby and not necessarily an addiction. Although both can be addicted and slack on irl responsibilities.

To you achievements are pointless, but for some people they enjoy them. It gives them a reason to play to 100% and see everything the game has an offer. Some people are collectors and like to collect 100% games. Nothing wrong with that. If thats what makes them feel accomplished in their hobby then so be it. If you just play for fun and dont care about accomplishing anything thats fine too..just dont diss people who enjoy using achievements as a tool to enjoy games.

This doesnt pertain to people who play games that pop 1k achievements in 5 minutes. Im talking about real games.
