"Bland" isn't the term I'd use for American cuisine. It's an unsubtle and unhealthy mix of different ethnic cuisines, but bland? Not really.

As for the UK, Northern Europe never had access to all the spices and foreign ingredients of the Mediterannean, many of which only grow in warm climates.
