Let's talk about space
Let's take a break from political circlejerks for a moment and appreciate the stark beauty and mysteries of the cosmos.

What are your space-related theories, questions and interests? Alien life and where/how we'll find it, the future of space exploration and colonization, the origin and fate of the universe, just astronomical oddities in general...

The one between your ears?
like the film "high life" i think future dangerous space missions (or ones in which there is no return) are like to be handled by criminals with life sentences (or planned executions).

the dangers of this are of course...that the criminals completely abandon the mission. because even with an authority or authorities on board controlling them, what exactly do they have to lose by refusing?

We're living in a bubble in the ocean.
if space is a vacuum then what is it cleaning?
Yeah, but like, if extra terrestrials existed... who do you think they'd vote for?

Bad way to go. But I doubt we'd ever do that. Dangerous missions are costly missions, can't entrust them to criminals. Plus, you need to be the very picture of sanity and executive function to be any use as an astronaut lol.

It reminds me of that super disturbing Stephen King short story, the Jaunt, where the eponymous teleportation system was first tested on a death row inmate. It translocates you instantly from the outside perspective, but it turns out that if you're awake through the procedure, you're fully conscious in a white void for trillions upon trillions of years.

Zod.
Imagine if aliens were having the same convo as us talking about “Hey, do you think there might be life outside our planet?”

Somewhere out there, somebody is asking the same question. Imagine what they would think of our biology, our history, our cultures...

in the film the ship and all of its processes mostly handle itself, the criminals (the crew) are mostly there for the end of the mission which requires a bit of hands on work.

but aye, it would not be a good idea. the mission is a massive failure in the film because one of the criminals goes rogue and purposefully sabotages the mission after she is sexually assaulted by another crew mate. and the amount of time it took for them to reach their destination means that by the timeearth is aware of the failure, it will be too late to send another crew. it is a very bleak film.

aye! i actually read "the jaunt" while i was in hospital years back having my appendix removed. bit of existential horror night before my surgery, what could go wrong?
Space.
The final frontier.

I forgot the rest of that speech from Star Trek...

Colonise space? That's preposterous, space is empty. No, no, no, that sounds like a fruitless endeavour. Furthermore, you can't even hear screams in space. I will have no part in such nonsensical chicanery!
