What ancestry did your grandparents derive from in 1900?
Mine were Spaniards (not LATAM, as in Spain itself), at that tiime: they were in a similar position as the British (aka. high social status) which is why I find most of the records written are in Spanish as that was the lingua franca used in Philippines (I'm half Filipino) mainly by those in affluent positions within society back then, even after the country transferred under US control.

I mean for example, people that are considered American today aren't "Native American" except for indigenous folks. White people come from somewhere (as in they have ancestry not from the USA, as their great grandparents once immigrated from another place, like Scottish-Americans) same with Black or Hispanic people (as they too come from abroad in which they immigrated).

Didn't know you're Asian.
the shogunate could have more claims to attempting self rule if I avoided politics, so I spent most of the tokugawa period in other countries. either practicing cultural concepts to see if they are relevant, or just staying away from villages suffering under the personal misrule of individual retainers.

i spent most of the 19th century in the us, supporting escaped slaves on hidden plantations in the south. towards the end I tried some simple chemical and manufacturing, like the creed lighter company.

by 1900 the meiji had advanced enough that I could participate in politics without disrupting shogunate rule, and I was also convinced of the futility of economics and trade as ends in of themselves.

i dont remember having any issues that would have caused a birth event.
