What does it mean when your computer gets the time wrong?
I have it set to automatic but it was out by 3 minutes. I had to reset the setting for it to update. Why is it out by 3 minutes if it is set to automatic? Should I put tin foil on the pc?

it means you slipped unnoticed into an alternate reality. spin a top and see if it ceases or keeps going eternally

I switched dimension again? Ugh I'm getting tired of this...
what year do you think it is, and has time been moving at the same rate for the past 26 years? or did it get manipulated for about 7 of them, to disguise something?

assuredly nobody would be so inept as to repeatedly shift minutes incorrectly after pulling off something like that.

Someone played that trick on me once, they changed the clock to 5pm and asked why i was still at work and then when I got home it was only 3:30pm... lol
Computer motherboards have a battery on them to run the RTC and other very basic features when it's powered off. They don't keep accurate time if those batteries die.
It's gotta be the cmos battery, yes.
os updates the clock every minute, every 5, and every 15 and 30.

it's like radio frequency controlled atomic clocks; if the server gets dinged a little, everyone's idea of what time it is goes out the window.

for example, someone sending the wrong time to the clocks in an area for a minute or two.

Check your internet connection, or it might be your CMOS battery might need replacing.

As others said it could be the cmos battery that said what's the age of the motherboard, because in general it takes years before the battery becomes a problem ... hell I have a 10 year old system here with its first battery and no problems
the operating system will update the correct time on boot.

even if the cmos battery is dead.

The ethernet cable was unplugged for a while earlier, so maybe.

I don't think it is the battery, it's not that old.

Probably just the cable then.
Bad updates can be an issue.

In this very office there is an atomic clock that cannot give the correct time.

It does a great job of measuring the temperature and humidity and looking good.

But it's about time to order a 3rd one in 5 years as the last one outright died.

clocks run on batteries and sync with servers, maybe one of these?
yep it could be the CMOS battery or not updated drivers

update your drivers and windows update

if that doesnt fix-reinstall windows

if that doesnt fix-change cmos battery
