Remember all their cries about deportations? They don't even let normal people in.

When price increase by 35%, do you continue to buy the same product or find a cheaper alternative?

Depends how cheap it was to begin with.
May the ghosts of Leonard Cohen, Stan Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot never allow that POS a moments peace ever again.

And Laurier. That sexy accent could drive anyone to distraction.

It means we buy elsewhere and Canadian companies begin losing 330 million potential customers. To avoid this, Many Canadian businesses will move to the US. Trump is practically pressing a boot down on the neck of the Canadian economy.

So the choice Americans have is pay 35% more for canadian stuff, or pay whatever % more for more expensive stuff produced by another country? Either way Americans are paying more.

Again, that's not how tarrifs work. We don't pay an extra 35% on the product. That is only charged on the cost to import which is far, far less than MSRP. It seems I have to explain this very simple, yet very important detail to you people on a daily basis. This means maple syrup from Canada will be a few cents more expensive per bottle. And that's all it would take to make a lot of people buy the other bottle instead.

It's not just maple syrup though. Pretty much the entire construction industry in northern states import their lumber. Northern states trees are primarily hardwood and bad from building work, to meet demand they either have to import softwood from Canada next door, or buy from south west united states where there is already a limited supply. Wholesaler MSRP is only like 5-10% higher than the import costs. Lumber will still go up around 30%.

This does probably make American lumber from the south west competitive at that price point, but if they suddenly double their customer base then their limited supply is going to be even more limited and prices will go up.... making canadian lumber the cheapest option still?
