anyone notice that a lot of places have been asking for data recently?
This comment has mostly stemmed by the steam questionnaire that has popped up twice for me, however i have noticed that this is happening a lot more, and i am assuming it's because of credit card company (oh no big scary) and that it is consistently asking for data. This is also appearing in dedicated windows menu essentially saying "give us your ip address"

Steam questionaire?
You don't have an IP address. You are assigned one. It can renew at anytime or sometimes it's just requested or changed at random.

They don't need to ask, they just take the data.... the bank is the only one that matters, so don't bank online.

When the internet was good, you could have a static IP, but all/most IP address for the user is shared now, meaning the pool of the address can be changed or rotated....

I suspect Valve is required to collect information for tax purposes.

I am curious about the windows menu asking for IP address. I have not seen or heard of that. Can you provide more details, please?

Valve can't do anything with any data, they can't do anything to you or anybody you know. Most of these video game apps or programs or api's can't do anything... Microsoft can do something, your ISP can do something. But these video game spaces, web sites and servers, gamers, people are not scary, just silly.

I didn't mean to suggest Valve can do anything to you. But Valve is likely required to collect information for tax purposes.
You mean like buying something with cash, and the clerk asks for your phone number?
Just give them some random number.

For no reason what-so-ever will Valve need your tax information.

They used to collect information for tax reasons (in the US). Maybe they stopped.

ETA: Seems they still ask.

You do you, of course.

I prefer staying legit.
All I know you greedy pricks and lairs tell some bad stories, bad actors, make some scam garbage and not complying to simple player requests.
The more polite way of saying, on please magical TOY maker, oh great master, please port this game over cause you are cheating people out not being able to play something that they would like to play, and you have no reason not to do it.

A reminder.... a suggestion....

But the anger gets in, you won't cause you want to make more money and cave to other people who have more money or power then you do, so you won't cause you are a greedy piece of sh*t bastard and a coward.
