Why do we make monitors wider but not taller?
Just as the title says, I'm curious why no one ever tries to make monitors taller and instead we just keep making wider and wider ultrawides. Not saying I want a tall thin monitor but I mean you can have both a wider AND taller monitor. I'm sure it's probably been done before and they find out that for whatever reason it wasn't practical.

They are basically making monitors wider because of games using realistic field of view. We see more horizontally than we do vertically. From google:

The human field of view (FOV) is the angular extent of the observable world visible at any given moment without moving the eyes or head. The maximum human FOV is approximately 200 degrees horizontally and 135 degrees vertically, encompassing both monocular and binocular vision.
Each individual eye has a horizontal FOV of about 135 degrees and a vertical FOV of just over 180 degrees, with the overlapping binocular FOV providing depth perception across roughly 114 degrees horizontally.
It's called portrait mode

You can just rotate a wide monitor and it becomes tall.
Try it sometime, it's actually pretty underrated IMO.
Something about square displays is unsettling. Even 16:10 aspect ration is weird.
I think it's also easier to concentrate on a wide image and look left and right rather than up and down.
If only you could rotate them 90 degrees.
Because human eyes scan side to side easier than they do up and down.

See more information at a glance with less vertical scrolling. Great for the office for viewing long documents, lists, and spreadsheets. Webpages look great, too.

Beginning part of this video explained it for me, surface PCs had 16:10 high quality monitors very rare so he tried making it an independent monitor.
You might like the Samsung ark (Either Gen 2 or Gen 3) monitor. It can rotate as desired.

I wouldn't suggest the Generation 1, but rather the others and only if you have the graphics card to juice it. It's a 4K monitor.

Wide screen is more for gaming upon, while vertical is ideal for work purposes. You get the best of both worlds.
