They used to charge pigs for crimes.
With like, jail, trials, and verdicts of death sentences. It wasn't just pigs, but mostly pigs.

I don't mean the pig farmer. I mean the pig. Like, the animal.

That's crazy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_trial

To quote one part of the article:

Pigs were often the target of criminal cases because they lived amongst humans and could be dangerous, especially for young children. An inventory of such cases between from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century finds 15 cases where pigs were executed for killing children. Generally, the condemned pigs were hung and sometimes tortured prior to execution. For example, in 1492, a piglet was dragged and then hung by the hind legs for murdering a child in Abbeville.[2]

In some cases, not only was the direct author of the crime found guilty, but "accomplices" might be identified. For example, in the village of Saint-Marcel-le-Jeussey in 1379, two herds of pigs were said to have rioted and incited an infanticide committed by other pigs. Although the pigs found guilty of homicide were sentenced to death, the two herds of complicit pigs were pardoned, thanks to the intervention of the Duke of Burgundy.[3]

Bruh, they even went after the nearby pigs as "accomplices", and handed out pardons to some of them.

the lives of swine are complex, they are more intelligent than dogs. some of the most intelligent animals on this planet, in fact. sometimes a bit of crime doing is necessary to keep things oinky.
Yes, pigs are very intelligent animals.

I just thought it was wild we actually put them on trial.
Bring back the animal death penalty. the pigs took over the revolution and need to be put back in their place.
Mostly unrelated but also a 'weird animal story'

The Celts used to determine social status...not by wealth, bloodline, or inheritance - but by how many cows you could steal.

So the most prolific cattle thief was the dude everybody had to suck up to.

American old west ain't got ♥♥♥♥♥ on them cowboys 🤠☘️

They are not very well documented and the intention are sometimes unclear.
There are arguments that some might just be a show for the family of the victim or they were for educational purpose.

Death penalty for animals is really common even today. Dogs that bite for example. In the 19th many elephants were killed by hanging.

Interesting thing i learned about pigs

If a certain agency needs to do "wet work" and disappear someone, they'll feed them to a pig or pigs

the sawyer family of the texas chainsaw massacre series also employs this tactic
And now we don't hold pigs accountable for anything😉
The longest feud in usa history started over a pig.

My family doesn't talk about that. But they certainly haven't forgotten.

Oh yeah! That definitely added to the disturbing aspect of those movies. I haven't seen them all, that's definitely something I want to actually finish doing since I find the horror in those films to be pretty good imo

Indeed, they've fed a ton of people to ICE just this year
wet work goes back to hiding in someones pig pen until after dark to kill their pigs.

police became associated with pigs for the same reasons private investigators were with dogs. pig crime was overwhelmingly what they got deployed for, and overwhelmingly the best response was to just beat the pig thief so that they stopped trying to steal or kill pigs, and the gradual shift to more complex criminality and systems of law has disfavored this time honored tradition.

pigs were associated with corruption because when a pig dies everyone gets bacon. so people would do corrupt things like wetwork and legally executing eachothers pigs to get bacon sales.

many infanticide cases were manufactured by third parties who had the judge on their feed list, in order to legally liquify a given pig stock. killing one child was cheaper than murdering two dozen pigs themselves, and caused fewer questions about the cybernetics i mean the bacon.
