I read a good novel about this situation a few years ago. An engineer woke into a medieval world and eventually was taken to see the local King. After being questioned by the King he was sent to work in the blacksmith area and he ruined every weapon that he touched. He tried to explain that he was who he said that he was and that he had the skills he claimed to have but that the tools he needed to make the tools that he would require to prove his claims were not available and he was eventually executed as a "liar".

The novel ended with the King thinking about the situation and believing that the Engineer's story may have some truth to it because the King still had a book of matches that was found in the guy's pocket when he was captured.
