Sounds fun...
One can only wonder how many people who want that live right next door to a coal plant.
Breathe in that air!
Fill those lungs!
As a country, it's not too bad in global terms. Not good by any means but there are plenty of other countries that are worse.
So why you pick on China.

but aye, pictures of large cities in china show pollution to be pretty horrible there as well.
China is the worst country in the world. This is because of the communist party there:
1. They kill people in modern concentration camps
https://hrf.org/latest/whats-happening-in-chinas-concentration-camps-qa-with-uyghur-camp-survivors/
2. They murder people and harvest their organs for communist party officials

3. They run hundreds of secret police stations all over the world to intimidate their expats and run communist propaganda everywhere. Just like in this forum there are several chinese agents here to derail threads and make new ones on a daily basis. They are here 24/7 and destroy the Steam forums.

The last link contains the full list of all secret police stations so you can look it up if there is one in your country and where it is exactly.
Because producing those critical materials domestically means we'll do so in compliance with existing regulations.
And the simple fact that we wouldn't pour wastes in the river would already put us vastly ahead of China.
Then there is also the strategic consideration of reducing the reliance on a foreign producer that is inevitably going to come at odds with the USA in the future being ultimately a good thing.
