Yeah it used to be when you start you are given a randomized list of questions that determine what your personality is and what pokemon you're gonna be all culminating with the final question of are you a boy or a girl?
There are lots of pokemon that you can become and interestingly genders that have the same pokemon have different personality types.
Mind you the list of pokemon you become are usually the starters and "some" fan favorites at the time. (You can become a Psyduck in the original Mystery Dungeon game which lets you have disable. A useless move in the main game... but is broken in Mystery Dungeon because stunning an enemy for a few turn is very overpowered. Unfortunately DX does not let you become a Psyduck anymore.)
These games are very fun as a kid but as an adult they lost their charm overtime because it's a mindless randomized dungeon floor game that takes a long time to complete.
Still the story with the gameplay mixes very well as for a adventure of you turning into a Pokemon.
Also sites like Bulbapedia has descriptions on which Pokemon personality type that lets you become in the old games.
DX lets you choose who you want to pick incase if you don't like the personality type quiz.
That is good... but it also loses the charm of why you chose it in the first place.
Then again it's your playthrough so it's your choice on how you want to play.
But seriously Psyduck was broken because of disable.
I got Torchic in Rescue Team and Super Mystery Dungeon, and Chikorita in Explorers of Sky.
