Rogue-yikes
If I had kids I'd tell them Rogue was a game where when you leveled up you picked one of three cards, and where there was lots of meta progress after you died.

They will have no choice but to believe me, when they see all the "Rogue-like" games on Steam.

Yes, this is why the obvious sarcasm. Today, the word means "actually not like Rogue at all".

I liked the original.

Nethack, Crawl, and many variants of Angband can all legitimately be called Roguelikes.

I'd argue that several ARPGs from Diablo 2 to Grim Dawn to Path of Exile can also trace their lineage back through Angband, Crawl, and Nethack back to Rogue, as well.

But not Vampire-survivor-likes. I absolutely love that genre, and I have quite a collection of them (Soulstone Survivors is my favorite), but they are not like Rogue. Not at all like it, in any way whatsoever.

I like any game that encourages Ironman, Masque.

Caves of Cud has no learning curve ... it just punches you in the face.
While you already are on the ground. Burning. And missing two legs and an arm. Famished.

I've had that on my wishlist on and off for years. Every time I clean out my wishlist I remove it again, because what the hell is wrong with me?, but something always tells me to put it back.

Yes, kbiz, Ironman is quite a challenge. I haven't even tried it in No Man's Sky, even though I've got almost 1300 hours in it. Seems like I probably know enough to survive?

Probably not. :steammocking:

I'm just sayin'.

The new definition of the term is apparently "has meta progression after you die", which Rogue absolutely did not have. The only thing you kept was what you yourself learned, in your brain.

Pac-Man is more Roguelike than most games with that label on Steam.

You are mistaking rogue-like with rogue-lite. It is a common mistake and probably why you are seeing games with the wrong tags. Just report them.

Have you ever played Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead?
I love that game, but HOO BOY is it's learning curve a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare. Caves of Qud's a cakewalk in comparison.
