Do you believe harsher punishment deter crime?
Title says it all.

Me personally I don’t know. Some people just don’t care and do it regardless. And do you believe death sentence should or shouldn’t be a thing?

Feel free to discuss.

Hm? What’s Indonesia’s story?
Studies have shown, that harsher sentences do not have an effect on crime rates. The issue is, that the people, who commit these crimes work under the assumption, that they will not get caught, so harsher sentences do not deter them more than already existing ones.

drug related crimes in many places in asia like indonesia, china, singapore and japan have extremely harsh sentences (including death). drug related crimes are by far one of the most common crimes.

II heard a phase a lot of times: "Inevitability of punishment for the crime works much better that harshness."

No , the punishment comes after the crime and at that point it’s too late . Crazy people , criminals , and risk takers exist . Some people don’t care . You can make crime as punishable as death itself and it still doesn’t stop people . Just look throughout what’s happened in past civilizations where punishments were extremely severe . Did evil dictators and kings stop doing what they did due to the possibility of being stoned or tortured? No they didn’t .

The only thing that will ever truly deter crime is someone having a realization that what they’re about to do is wrong and then not making said decision.

There will always be people who are willing to do things . You can’t really control people .

I believe it’s the same in the Philippines too.

The Prompt isnt "do harsher punishment eliminate crime" it's "do harsher punishment deter crime".

Before that happens, I would see ANY kind of punishments when politicians do crimes. I cannot accept someone with immunity telling me what kind of sentence I deserve.

No.

Imprisoning more people does not deter crime. It declares them to be criminal, so the crime already happened.
If jaywalking carried the death penalty, most people wouldn't jaywalk.

People biologically disposed towards jaywalking would eventually be reduced.

Scaring people with a severe punishment isn’t fixing the problem. You need to understand why the people are doing said crimes and how to get them to mentally disagree with their actions .

If someone says “ I don’t do that because I’ll be punished “ then that person would and will do it if they can get away with it .

Once a person’s mind is made up and set out to do something ... fear will only escalate the situation further in a negative way .

Correct. Putting criminals in jail deters crime....

Here is proof.
