Even in 1 on 1, abusers like to test the waters and see if someone is desperate enough for attention that they'll stay with them after violating their boundaries or being abusive.

Something is already wrong when you're wiling to accept that kind of treatment to yourself, but it gets even more wrong when people are both willing to accept it from the uppers in the hierarchy, and dish it out to others as well.

This isn't to say that all banter, insult, physical violence, force, and coercion are all abuse or wrong but the crux of the issue as to whether it's abuse or not is :
Did you consent to it (arguably with a genuine desire to receive such treatment)
and without duress or blackmail or such?

Like if you know the hazing is part of joining a group before joining then you don't have much ground to stand on to complain (but you might still have a little bit), however, if you didn't know and it was sprung upon you by surprise then that's peak victim-hood because you had no chance to consent and what was done to you was probably illegal, in addition to deeply immoral and harmful.

How do you know it was good-natured at all?

Hazing is a test of your tolerance for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and even your wit if you're able to turn some of it around on people.

It is important for a team to know where everyone's breaking point is, because a chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

That makes a lot more sense than the reasons that people usually give.
There are situations where hazing occurs where everything you just said is completely unnecessary, though, so I think it depends.

There's also the issue that some tests are just stupid and can make the people doing the testing of boundaries look like a legitimate threat and thus spark a reaction that results in a literal life or death situation.

Seriously doubt OP survived a code red/blanket party. I seen grown men with broken ribs on the floor crying. Likely wasnt in military or prison even.

If only it were that simple but unlike contracts, you can't always search for fine-print and read the whole thing. Sometimes in life, you get a raw deal with no (or insufficient) agreement or warning beforehand.

Being "sodomized" with a bottle isn't my idea of good-natured ribbing.
