Perhaps its like "zombies" and is overused and all too predictable?
it is definitely overused. FNAF was cute when it came out because the juxtaposition of cutesy mascot characters + horror was still relatively rare. since its release it exploded into absurd popularity and spawned two dozen sequels, films, books and a hundred copycats. and from the ones i have played/watched, they are all pretty much the same.
I suppose the point of mascot horror is to circle back to when people were in their youth, and some people had phobias of mascots. Kind of like a phobia of clowns.
I always thought mascots were just a nuisance and I would feel bad for the person whose job it was to have to live in that suit.
I guess if they were a sports mascot, that would be kind of cool to be able to be on the field or something and get to see all the games. But, it would only be enjoyable for someone who was already interested in the sport
