Map will not run-- stuck on portal flow (Please help!)
While I have been designing with hammer, mainly with the Counter Strike Source engine on multiplayer, and now that my map has been expaning, the time netween map runs increases, as expected, however, now at about portal flow 2 the windows goes dark and windows registers it as not responding.

It generally does this, but as most of you know if you let it sit, it is actually loading and will return to running the map. But mine will not, the only way for it to completely compile is for me to go to processes in the task manahger and end all the processes that are a part of it: vsvs, vres, etc. Then the map will suddenly launch with all the new compiled areas.

The only problems are that teh lighting is the same as it is in the preview screen, I.E. puttting in lighting doesnt do anything, the test skybox casts no light, its just the same basic lighting that hammer gives you when designing. Also, I do not want to launch it like this every time, I'm sick of hammer getting lagged down because it "isn't responding"

At one point, I let it sit for about 45 minutes- hour and it was still not responding.

I hear this is a common problem, so if any of you know a way to fix this, please let me know!!!

Sounds like you might have a leak or bad area portals try using a program like VBCT for compiling https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Batch_Compile_Tool

I am no expert at this but this sounds slightly like a problem I had earler. If the fact that your map is not so big that it just freezes or it realy is still running and it is just taking way longer then you would think. one of mine took up to 10 min. to compile. The fix I used was to make sections of the map sepritly so the long compile was avoided. when finished copy and past to your main map and save. if that is not it and you should try this first. select all, copy your map and start a new one and paste it there save it under a different name and try to compile. This worked for me when I had a lighting issue like you explain and the same above advise was given to me except I think the link was different. but my fix worked. The only adverse effect I saw was some props needed to be deleted and replaced. I was also using the portal authering tools Beta. but I dont think that should matter.

Hello, VBCT seems to be working for me, it is a lot more helpful, I can tell where the loading process is at and I don't have to sit in the dark while windows deems the compiler as non-responsive, so far I think this will work just fine, thanks for the help everyone!

Alright, even with VBCT I cannot seem to get pas "9.." Do I let it sit or should I cancel and compile it in "fast" mode?
