How the hell do I use lights
In the tutorials people make, they just place a light and it magically works. Not for me. If I do the exact same thing they do, it is still the default, uniform, ugly brightness. What the hell am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

Garry's mod, but I'm using the counter-strike source thing. And it happens with other things too. I have reinstalled multiple times and I still have the same issue.

I dont know anything about garry"s mod but if the Counter-strike source thing is hammer then you should be able to just dubble click the light to bring up the properties for editing I am assumming you know how to make a light from an info_player_start.

I've just been creating the lights directly. Do I have to do it from the info_player_start?

how do you mean directly?, To my knowledge the info_player_start is the fastest way. now I mostly work with portal but they both use hammer. if you are just using a mdl. that will give you basic low light but if you realy want controle you need to create an entity info_player_start changed to light and all the options will be there for you. You could also use an instance but They tend to be a little more complicated at least for me.

I just go into the entity placer thing and type in "light_dynamic" or "light_spot", depending on what I want.

ok I dont usualy do it that way but yes that should work fine dubble click the light you made to get its properties you can change color, brightness and so on. I have also found that it is a good idea to always click apply twice.

It doesn't. No matter what I try, it does not work. Can someone walk me through, step by step, what I am supposed to place?
Here's what I normally do:
Create a room.
Create a spawn.
Create a light.
Run map to see if the light worked for once. (it didn't.)
Wonder what the hell I'm doing wrong, or if I am doing anything wrong.

I will try to help you but it seams that you are doing everything right. is this the first time you are using hammer or is this the first time you are having this issue. if you havent yet you should varify your steam files

First time I've had this issue. I know the basics (most of them) and have managed to make a dark map in the past, but I can't for some reason now.

ok I may have misunderstood you you want a dark map buts the lights are staying on full

It's bright by default and adding a light doesn't change that.

that is odd I can truly say I have never had this issue before. try to make a dummy map and see the problem exists if not then try to copy your entire map to a new grid and name something differint. this is similier to an issue I had in the past but still differint if it does not work I am not sure what to sugest
