I get this too, or something very similar, since a couple of days. Several games now crash consistently when I try to play them (games that have never crashed on me before). For me, it's often not immediately on startup, but a few seconds later, when I click something in the in-game menu. The Steam Client however crashes instantly when i launch a game, any game.
Edit: I was on the Steam Client beta branch. The "about steam" window said it was built Jan 25. I changed to non-beta and now it works.
Edit 2: My theory is that the Steam Client crashes first, and then the game crashes because it tries to communicate with the non-existent client process (using pipes).
I really hope Valve won't promote this beta to stable release before fixing this issue then.
And to be clear the crashes also didn't always happen immediately on startup for me; it differs per game but for a given game it always happens consistently in the same moment. For example in Mutazione it happens after the logos have been displayed, during the first loading screen.
Go to your Steam settings, in the 'Account' tab you'll see a section labeled 'Beta participation', click 'Change' and you'll have the option to opt out of the beta.
Also thanks so much for the solution, was getting really frustrated with how Steam was acting.
I got steam itself to crash too.
When?
