It's hard to even describe how many issues I've been having with Steam Controller Layout and my xbox 360 controller
So first off, my controller seems to be working perfectly fine when I go Steam -> preferences -> controller -> test device inputs. Everything is working exactly as it should. However almost every game I play has severe issues where the controller is practically unusable.

By far my biggest problem: steam controller mapping literally does nothing. I can not change the mapping of anything within steam's controller layout settings, no matter what game. It's either that changes are instantly reverted (e.g, I will map a button, exit, and immediately check again to see the button mapping is the same as the defaults) or occasionally it DOES stick in the overlay menu, but this doesn't affect the game in any way and the controls don't change. If this feature ACTUALLY worked, I could fix everything. But as it stands, and I can't stress this enough: steam controller overlay is literally completely broken and does nothing.

I have been testing my controller with 4 different games.

1. Gone Home - The controller registers but is in unplayable condition. Most of the face buttons don't work, and I can't move forwards. I can move left and right, but pressing up OR down on the analog stick will move me backwards. I can't open the steam overlay menu whether or not I'm in big picture mode.

2. The Witness - Both analog sticks have inverted vertical controls. I can't open the steam overlay whether or not I'm in big picture mode.

3. Soma - Every now and then the game just works. But 95% of the time when I open it, both analog sticks have inverted vertical controls. I can open the steam overlay, but changing the control mapping does nothing.

4. Tunic - No issues with the controller whatsoever! It runs perfectly! However, I still can't change the mapping in steam controller overlay even just for testing.

My steam client is up to date. I'm on a macbook pro M4, Sequoia 15.5.

Hey, controller support on mac can be weird sometimes, some games work with steam input, some do not, it ultimately depends on each game implementation of controllers support.

First the fact that the steam input settings doesn't reflect in your game makes me think you might not have steam input enabled by default (which doesn't prevent steam itself from detecting it, it just doesn't use it in games), check for each game by going to your library game page -> properties -> controller and see if it is enabled for your controller brand.
Wether or not it is enabled, you can try to test if turning it on (if it wasn't already enabled) or off (if you were actually using it) change anything.

If for some reason steam input actually doesn't work either you try to find in your game settings if you can change the mapping (for example Tunic does that and doesn't need to rely on steam input) or you try to change the mapping of your controller from your mac settings.

As for steam overlay not working for some games, it is most likely due to the game itself, when the game itself has a launcher (like the witness, I don't know for Gone Home), which can cause steam functionalities to stop working (like the overlay, and even steam input) simply because they are not included in the actual game.
