So what is the deal with this scam like behavior?

Some random person friended me and claimed that someone impersonated my account to scam items from TF2. They said that I should “complain” to the administrator of the group before the “1580+ active member mass report you”.

I went ahead and friended the administrator out of curiosity and asked to be removed from the “scammers” post they had. By this point I already had a feeling something was up, but I was curious to see how this scam played out.

Anyways I was told by the administrator to post my trade link in the DMs so they could “check my trade history”, and wouldn’t accept the one that’s on my profile. By this point I just stopped communicating.

So my question is, what the heck is the goal of this scam? If it’s not a scam then what could be the reason for this? From my googling, there should be someone claiming to be steam support, not some random person claiming I’d be “mass reported”.

They first tell you you are mass reported and then send you to a "Steam Support" on Discord. I think you were asking too many questions and they didn't know how to proceed.

The goal is to trick you out of your inventory, money, and/or your account. Whatever you might be gullible enough to hand over before you catch on.

I should mention, I meant the admin of the Steam group, not a Steam admin.

I'd report the admin and the group itself. It's possible that the members of the group are also scam victims as well as probably having scammers in it but if it is being used for malicious purposes then certainly report it.

There absolutely are administrators on Steam. They're the ones with this text at the top of their profiles:

There are no Steam staff called administrators on this platform. Valve may hire administrators in their office but no user will ever be directed to contact an administrator of any kind or receiving messages/correspondence from someone identifying as one.

The ones with the text are identifiable Valve employees - predominately community moderators. They also wont contact users or have any control over accounts. ALL contact is done through Steam Support.
