Report a translation problem
First thing to try is to go to your gfx card's utility and force it to choose the correct options for Steam and/or the games in question.
And of course, make sure your drivers are up to date.
Oh and while it's a long shot, don't forget to update your audio card drivers too. Because of how utilities like DirectX work that affects performance too.
Lastly, make sure to check each game's individual forums on here as traditionally older games on Steam often don't get the proper support that they do for say, GOG releases. So there may be fixes or updates.
