Way to keep hidden object from exporting?
Is there a better way to keep objects from exporting with an .smd other than manually ticking them off in the "Group Properties" menu, such as not exporting hidden things?

I thought it did that automatically in older versions, but I could be misremembering.

Hidden objects have always been exported. You have to configure the export in the panel that you are already using.
