When exporting an animated model to DMX, the mesh itself and the armature get exported, but no rigging data seems to be included, and the mesh does not react to animations even though the bones move properly. Importing the DMX file to blender again shows vertex groups being absent on the mesh.

I've tested it with several meshes that worked correctly in the past. Exporting to SMD works correctly.

Using a clean install of Blender 2.80 RC3 and an up-to-date version of the tools downloaded from the GitHub master branch.

True, but there isn't really anything linking Blenders materials to what gets exported. The material inteface has a complex system attached to it, since the exporter doesn't use any of the settings in it apart from the name, it seems pretty counterintuitive to have the name you set there dictate what string gets exported. Add to that the separate UV/Image system, it gets even more confusing (even with the selection box that allows you to toggle between them).

Also, if my suggested view filtered for materials that are actually applied to faces, it would give an easy way of checking that the right material is applied before exporting.

A lot of first time users (myself included way back) seem to have trouble finding how to set what material names to export with the mesh.

The UI doesn't really have any indications of what material will be exported and the rest of the toolchain doesn't show the names anywhere, leaving users having to open .smd and .mdl files with a text editor to find out what material names they got.

A possible improvement would be to have a list on the export panel that shows which material names a mesh will use, and maybe allowing you to change the names directly from it.
