How do I make my hat metallic?

Ramp up the phong lighting to give it more of a shiny effect. You can also use an env_mask to reflect the world.

Thanks! And another thing...
For some reason my texture becomes invisible wherever I make it black in the alpha channel. Is this supposed to happen?

Hm... you might be messing with the $additive or $translucent commands in the vmt. Try turning those off.

No, like the texture becomes invisible when I put it in blender. However, you can see it if it's white

Oh. Yeah so Blender has a feature that allows for transparency depending on your alpha channel. I can't remember exactly where that option is (or how you turned it on), but let's see if a quick google search shows up with anything: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Materials/Properties/Transparency
