You can choose the option for hats or whatever cosmetics in the beta importer. It automatically removes it for you.

You should be able to render, i dont know why you cant. And yes you can just uv unwrap the model, export the layout and use an alternative software like photoshop to paint.

Someone has done a weapon tutorial on youtube involving maya instead of blender. I havent watched the full tutorial, but I assume it involves Source SDK and not the beta importer.

If there were modifiers applied then it might cause problems. Could you upload your .blend?

In edit mode, select the whole mesh and press Ctrl+N. I suspect that the normals might be unconsistent; this will normalize the model. Its worth a try.

I made a model with a jigglybone, even edited the qc. The preview shows no errors, but there is no jiggle in the model preview. Is this a problem with the importer or have I done something wrong?

It looks good, but the texture on the pot seems a bit bland.
