Try the following development version of Crowbar and let me know if it works or not, and what the log messages are.

What do you mean by "steam crashes"? Does Steam close itself? Does an error window pop up in Steam? After Steam crashes, are you able to continue using Crowbar?
What size file are you trying to upload?
What are the quota numbers shown in the box below the Publish button?
My file size is 281 MB
The quota below the publish button just says "unknown"
Have you tried uploading via the workshop uploader app found in L4D2 authoring tools?
Would you link me the VPK and image file you are trying to publish? I can try publishing the same files (with Hidden visibility) to my L4D2 workshop; maybe Crowbar or Steam is having trouble with one of them.
Just to be clear. Did you try uploading the same VPK and image via the L4D2 workshop app yesterday? If that app had similar problem as Crowbar, then it's likely a Steam problem, but if it had no problem, then it's likely a Crowbar problem.
Would you try publishing with Crowbar today and copy-paste the entire publish log into a reply here? Would you also link a screenshot of Crowbar window after Steam crashes? You can screenshot just the Crowbar window by making Crowbar the active window, pressing Alt and Print-Screen keys at the same time, then pasting into a image app, such as Paint, saving it there. Zip it up with the VPK and image file you are trying to publish.
Thanks for helping me debug this.
Also, I am using Windows.
I'll test Crowbar with bigger preview images and try to avoid crashing Steam.
