I got a model that around 52k triangles large and I need to reduce it a lot but I'm not sure by how much yet.

If you use Crowbar to decompile the .mdl file, it will export a decompiled set of files, QC and SMD.

qc = text file with all of the details of the model (you need to edit this in notepad++ or so)
smd = vertex data (you can ignore this unless you need to change the textures or geometry)

So, Crowbar, decompile the .mdl file in it, navigate to the export directory there, open the qc file, edit as needed, then go to the 'compile' tab on Crowbar and select the QC file and press 'compile' and you'll have your edited model file in your game files.

When looking at how to replace alyx with a custom model, I saw from some tutorials that I needed to modify a QC file. What is a QC file and do I need to know python for it?

I used gmad to extract a addon file and its models and I was able to replace Alyx's model with it through the custom folder. However whenever I go into HL2, none of the animations work for her. Is there a way to solve this?
