An Idea For a Map I Cannot Make: KOTH_Airraid
Map creation has always been something I've wanted to pursue, and for a while now I've had ideas for maps manifest inside my head that I've always wanted to create. One of these ideas was actually inspired by WWII themed combat, and I've elaborated on its potential concepts prior to this amazing community project (or at least until I found out about it). The reason I haven't started working on this map idea is because I don't have the right technology avalible to me to produce such a map, as, unfortunatley, Hammer World Editor is not avalible on my operating system. I also cannot afford a proper PC at the moment as well. I've been patient, waiting for the day where I could finally launch Source SDK and start learning the basics of map making, but with this update coming out, my WWII themed map idea would seem silly if it were to be made after Frontline is released (assuming this will happen).

The map idea I have in mind would fit perfectly into this update, but as stated before, I can't create it, So, I have an alternate plan. At the moment I'm not going to mention any details of what I have in mind until I've created a tangible means of expression of it. In any case, I hope I can maybe inspire one of you community participants of the Frontline project to maybe produce a map based around my concepts. I will create artwork of my map idea, concept portraits, bird's eye views of the potential map layout, all in hopes that maybe I can inspire someone participating in this community update.

This isn't a commission, or a request, rather something to inspire. I'm not asking anyone to make this for me rather I wish to give ideas to this community. Futher details of what my idea is will be explained in a later disscussion, as well as concept artwork.

Edit: Having trouble with scanner, concept artwork will be delayed.

Apologies for low image quality

This is KOTH_Airraid. A map concept that I've long though about and wanted to make. It's hard to gather details from this image so I'll explain a little more in depth.

The premise of KOTH_Airraid revolves around combat in Britian, WWII. During bombing runs by the enemy, the British would kill the lights, insuring that enemy bombers would not have a clear view of what they were hitting. KOTH_Airraid explores that concept.

This is what I had in mind for how the map would work: Each team will combat eachother in an attempt to capture the central objective in their allies' color; basic king of the hill mechanics. Once the pont is captured for a set amout of time, the team currently in possesion of the objective will deactivate the lights of their base, rendering the enemy's base fully illuminated and visible. Following this, a plane will fly overhead and drop a bomb on the base that's currently illuminated, destroying it, spelling victory for the team whose base is still standing.

Each round would be split into two segments, two mini-rounds of approximatley 0:01:50, the typical holding time for a TF2 objective divided in half. Each team must attempt to capture and hold the objective for this amount of time. When a team successfully captures and holds the point for the one minute and 50 seconds required, their base's lights are temporarily deactivated, and a plane bombs the enemy's illuminated base. After this, the match enters it's second mini-round. Combat is not interruped and the map does not reload or reset anything. The only thing reset is the objective, as it returns to a neutral state allowing anyone to capture it again. This means that each base essentially has two lives, giving each team two chances to capture and hold the capture zone for the required amount. The teams must again try to capture and hold the objective for another one minute and 50 seconds. If a team successfully holds the objective for two rounds (does not need to be held consecutively), the plane will once again bomb the illuminated, now partially damaged base once again, destroying it and winning the round for the team whose base is still standing.

Now since I can't make this map myself, I'm giving out the concept to anyone who likes it and wants to explore it for themselves. This means that person will have full creative freedom over the entirety of the map. You may feel free to use my design, alter it, or go an entirely different direction completley. I'm not a professional map maker, and there are probably flaws in the design I have, so I'm allowing revamping/alterations, complete redesigning, etc.

The only thing I ask of the potential person who wishes to do this is that they contact me via friend request. I would like recieve partial credit for the concepts and such, so because of this it is important that the mapmaker using my idea asks permission of me first. It is unlikely, however, that I will deny a request. The mapmaker must also remain friends with me so that we may discuss topics such as the map's progress and such. I will not tell the creator what to do, rather I will give my input and opinions that they will have the choice of agreeing with, disagreeing with, incorporating, or ignoring.

Feel free to leave any questions, comments, criticisms, etc you may have in the discussion section below; I appreciate feedback.

-Thanks, more concept art to come,

Spawnroom concept image. Basically an interpritation of what a munitions factory might look like. Again, apologies for low image quality.

I think there already is a map called air raid... I'm not sure though.

Thanks, I wish the same for the Frontline community. Even this idea isn't made or featured, it will still be great to see this update published by Valve and the community.

Latley I've been busy with school and such, and I haven't updated this discussion in quite a while. I do wish to restate that I am incapable of making this map due to hardware limitations, and this idea is open to expand upon/make if anyone wishes to do so. Read the terms in the disscussion paragraph. Hopefully I can get around to uploading more concept art for this idea I have at some point. Also I apologise if this is considered necroposting.

the problem is that it will require dynamic lights, and these lights are expensive to render and light bounce isn't calculated

I see; Like I said, not an expert at Hammer. Thanks for letting me know.

All the lights I describe in my map concept are stationary, is it possible for there to jus be a texture change for when the lights are on/off? Or maybe just sprites to give the effect of visible light glow without being dynamic or altering shadows?

These WOULD be dynamic lights.

Ok, thanks for the heads up.
