Anyway, since Half Life: Alyx is coming, so Bobby is worse I suppose.
The same applies to TF2 but with different dates, the game was first P2P, then random cosmetic loot was added, then lootboxes(dubbed "Mann Co. crates") in September 2010, and after that the game went F2P in June 2011.
-Edit-
Despite your edit, my point still stands. Those are free to play games now. If you're comparing them with the newest CoD, then I'm going to argue about them in their current state.
Even when compared to the older CoD like Black Ops I, II, Ghost, or MW3 that came out around the same time, the lootboxes are basically the same as CoD's cosmetic DLCs, only with RNG. Valve doesn't put additional multiplayer maps behind paywalls on an already paid game. Both free and premium accounts in CS:GO and TF2 can access all maps and game modes. Only differs in item drops.
In the end, all of those cosmetics are optional. You don't have to purchase it if you don't want to. It doesn't affect the gameplay in any way. It only serves as ego stroke, for people to show off. I honestly don't understand why people are so upset about it.
