How does workshop calculate the ratings?
I got 26 ratings on one mod: 24 likes and 2 dislikes. That's 24/26 positive = 92%. Workshop calculated a 92% as 3/5 stars. I'm guessing there's more to it than just the percentage on the item stats page.

Someone please enlighten me on how the ratings are calculated, thank you.

Definitely has to do with the volume of them as well. With all positive ratings, something like 40+ one of my mods had 3 stars, I don't think it hit 4 until 60 or 70

I remember reading that it uses a specific system( forgot the name ) in which the number of ratings is a big factor. For example, if you get 1 rating that's 5 stars, it won't give 5 stars because only one person rated it.
