Thanks for looking that up. That's how I'm using DebugDrawLine, but seeing nothing at all (in both tools and not).

As far as tracing, I am setting start to entity origin, having it ignore itself and scaling the forward vector. But even if I specify the end as straight down 512, units, it still happens. So I scan straight down 512 units, and set the origin to the pos, the prop just moves up and up each iteration until it's not hitting anything, and even then it seems like a lot more than 512 units. I didn't think to do the math when I was testing but eyeballing it, had to be at least 1024 units.

Also in both mutation and not, the mask defines don't seem to actually be defined

Hope this isn't OT, I've just released a tool for packing a campaign from a mission file. Since most of the l4d2 modders are members here, I figured this would be a good place to announce.

It scans the mission for bsps, collects all the bsps, navs, commentaries, vmts, vtfs, models, (and materials), cubemaps, etc and copies them to addons under a folder named after the mission

Kind of what I meant about "Barring ladders, ducking", I think it would work for slopes and things, but yeah, not jumping over cars or anything. I actually did some experimenting with it, but not much luck. I thought .pos was where the trace hit, but doesn't appear to be the case. I just had a prop_dyamic scan forward and down, setting it's origin to .pos, it detected what it was hitting correctly, but not where. It just kept moving a large amount in the opposite direction of the trace. I'm sure it's something I'm just not understanding. Also, can't get DebugDrawLine or DebugDrawLine_vCol to draw anything

And it would still be fair for competitive modes as both players would be using them if they were tied to a campaign

It is a lot,but what I'm saying is that might not be the bottle neck in game. I've not that familiar with Squirrels under-pinnings, but I know in say, Perl, there's a bit of overhead going from Perl to C, type conversions, memory allocation/deallocation, etc.

I've dabbled with making npcs in vscript for a couple years now. Before it was almost impossible as you had no real handle into the world, though fps is still locked to 10fps which is very choppy. I wish you could bump up nextthink for an entity but there may be a good reason why you can't. In Portal2, you can up it as a whole, which is what I did in the vscript2smd generator. I still need to finish porting that to the beta.

Barring ladders, ducking, maybe something like this would work to move to an ent or position.

Get the flow position of target pos or ent.
Trace 4 sloped rays NESW,
If any hit, use GetFlowDistanceForPosition to see which is closer to target,move to that
Otherwise, try again with rays rotated 45
If nothing hit, decrease radius (ie increase slope)

I don't know how much that would save. I would think a lot of overhead is just passing things back and forth between the engine and the interpreter but who knows.

I think generic NPCs without some type of npc entity to support it would be pretty hard to pull off with the limitations/performance requirements.

Ref counting definitely has overhead. Out of curiosity, what are you doing in your test loops? I've never really had any issues with Squirrel game-wise, one thing I've found, is printing seems very slow, but I've found that to be the case for a lot of embedded interpreters/vms. (for example, Ruby in Sketchup)

Not 100%, but I think in multiplayer, that only gets passed on the activator, for all clients, you need point_broadcastclientcommand. As far as creating them, I might be totally making this up, but I thought you could only have one instance. Maybe that's why it fails to create one? Does the map you're testing it on already have one? Might want to check that.
