Blocking is making poses between 6-16 frames, to indicate the basic poses of the animation. So if you wanna make a complecated motion, instead of going frame by frame and by the end realizing it's very unatural, blocking offers you a preview of the animation, very early.
The poses usually have stepped transitions, so they are "blocky".

Watch this, and i suggest watching the whole series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8quCbt4C-c&list=PL-bOh8btec4CXd2ya1NmSKpi92U_l6ZJd&index=4

I think it illustrates the beauty of animation perfectly, and very consiscely. I personally watch it if im feeling unmotivated. I may have not gotten into animation without it.
