Music for the Saxxies?
Since the Saxxies are gonna be out soon, what type of music can we use? Just Valve's/our own stuff? Or are we allowed to use stuff from sites like royalty free music? It would be awesome to know ahead of time so I can make a crappy keyboard recording if need be...

If you use music made by someone, you need permission from them.
Or else your video will have ads and thus disqualified
Unless you managed to get rid of the ads before voting closes.

what does having someone else's music on your video have to do with ads?
I think it should be fine. I mean you have to use music you have rights for and that's the point of royalty free music.

Iunno. Anyway, are we still required to get permission from music creator for using the music ? Becauuse that would be really tedious.

if you use copyrighted music there is a chance youtube can slap ads on your video that you can't remove.

oh, I see. but that doesn't happen to "someone else's" music, it happens to pieces with "regular" copyright that youtube flags.
royalty free music basically means you can use it for anything as long as you don't resell it or use it as your own. here[incompetech.com] is an example. lot of youtubers use this, especially the smaller ones.
the real question is, Valve says you have to have "explicit permission from the owner". I'm not sure if pointing at the license counts as "explicit". I think so, but if you want to make sure, the best thing you can do is pop them an email asking it and write here the results for others.

they updated to say you can use royalty free music. as long as you link it.

Soundcloud.com has a creative commons section, and even a group that has nothing but Creative Commons tracks. https://soundcloud.com/groups/creative-commons

Kevin McCloud has a large bunch of tracks he has placed in the public domain which you can use.

http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/

http://www.freesound.org has a lot of stuff but you have to look harder.

http://freemusicarchive.org is similar.

And then there is Ocremix.org where you simply need to ask permission from the author.
