Steam Deck Button Chord Configuration revert back to default after any modification
OS : Windows 11
Steam Big Picture

STEPS :
  • Go to Big Picture Mode
  • Open Settings
  • Select Base Configurations in Controller
  • Select Steam Button Chord Configuration
  • Modify the configuration from there or import one by pressing X
  • Apply the modification (press B) or export (press Y)


So i tried to add a new chord button to the basic configuration (By ScottD) on the Steam Deck. The modification can be saved, but each time i try to apply it's immediately override by the old one.

The goal was to assign STEAM + Y to MINIMIZE BIG PICTURE .

The problem might be related to the Steam Deck controller aka neptune.

Also tried to import various Steam Button Chord Configuration from the community, it all revert back to default.

Please report here if you have a similar experience on your Steam Deck so it could reach valve.

Confirmed same issue with Steam deck on windows 11. Steam Button Chord Configuration and Big picture Configuration revert to default settings when attempting to change button assignment. Button assignments are not retained.

Experiencing the same issue in the stock os. No changes are saved but i can export in-progress changes. I just want an alt+tab button on the desktop. =)

having the same issue when making changes to the big picture configuration as well, both running the base os & on win 10 client

Same issue. No matter what I change, it just reverts back to the default config. Would be nice if I can remove the magnifier "trigger" because I had a few times when that thing just popped in. I also want to set L4 or L5 to take screenshots but I just can't. Valve, fix this asap.

Huge oversite, they have steam chord default with the down on dpad being "tab" but no "alt" preset. The thing I find interesting is in desktop mode the "select" button is set to "tab" and right bumper as "left alt". So you can alt+tab between windows while on desktop, which is nice. However, I'd love to be able to alt+tab while in a game while playing games in desktop mode.

Still not fixed. Playing games in Steam desk desktop mode is literally unusable for months now it’s rediculous

Well, there is now a minimize option in the power menu of the big picture mode. I can use that for the time being when i need to reach the desktop screen. Though it's not as ideal as pressing a key combination it's still better than nothing.
Indeed they had plenty of time to fix it, so it doesn't seem like it's in their priorities unfortunately.

How did you get the power menu to show minimize? Valve updated the Steam client so you can turn on a setting to change the Steam overlay to be the BPM overlay in desktop mode. Which mean, I can actually open the overlay while in desktop mode, before, the Steam button didn't do anything as it was wanting the default shift+tab to be pressed. The power menu for me in BPM and desktop mode with BPM overlay doesn't show minimize, is this a setting?

Hi, i haven't done anything in particular, maybe it's because i'm using the beta version.

It works on both my steam deck and my pc. Correction it doesn't work on my pc when i launch a game but it works on the steam deck, maybe they assume that PC could use win+D.

It's exactly one year later, and it's STILL not fixed. I have the same issue. It keeps reverting back to the default configuration no matter what you do.

It doesn't just revert. On the client version I'm using (beta), the option to configure Guide/Steam Button Chord is gone entirely. This is possibly the most important input-related option on a device meant to be controlled entirely with joypad buttons, especially in desktop mode where the Steam overlay often doesn't work. Ingame, the game specific mapping takes over, so other shortcuts no longer work. What am I supposed to do if a game freezes? Force-restart the device? Valve is really dropping the ball here.

From my troubleshooting it would appear that the inability to change the config is not due to the Steam version running on the Deck (I tried installing a different one), but rather that Steam detects that your controller is the Steam Deck and forces it to have the default config. That seems to be the reason why even people who install Windows on the Deck can't change it. All current versions of Steam are just hardcoded to apply the default config if your controller is the Deck. What absolutely abysmal software design.

I love Steam Deck, but I'm tired to assign hotkeys to back buttons everytime. Just give me ability to assign my hotkeys to Steam Button, what's the problem with it? Awful decision to turn it off.
